Marlborough Rising: Review of Wilding and Flyte at The Town Hall

Sam Berridge and Will Taylor of FlyteSam Berridge and Will Taylor of FlyteOn Saturday evening Marlborough Rising welcomed up-and-coming alternative pop quartet Flyte to the Town Hall.  They were supported by the local group Wilding.

I George Wilding and James Barlow of WildingGeorge Wilding and James Barlow of Wildingwas looking forward to Wilding’s performance after their outstanding set at Sound Knowledge on Record Store Day, and I was not disappointed. They were characteristically energetic, and their guitar-driven sound coupled with heavy drums got a lot of the audience dancing.
Highlights included original song Elephant Man and their cover of Bowie’s Moonage Daydream– it was a shame that sound problems held them back as it was difficult to make out lyrics and individual instruments.

Flyte gave an exceptional performance, and what struck me was the way they gave particular focus to their vocals and harmonies, which gave them a unique edge. This was most evident when they sang acapella versions of Marry Me Archieand Faithless– all four are excellent vocalists and together they created a powerful wall of sound.

Charismatic frontman Will Taylor revealed that Flyte were testing out some new material for an upcoming album, so it was exciting to realise that we were among the first to hear these songs before their official release.

A highlight was I Don’t Wanna Talk About It, which according to Willwas about the typically English sentiment of not being able to comfortably share your feelings and say what you really mean.

Although their fresh songs were definitely promising, personally I preferred many of their older songs. Cathy Come Home, with its infectious beat and attention-grabbing hooks, was their standout performance of the night. Another memorable moment was their intimate rendition of their final song Faithless, which they sung while standing the middle of the crowd.

Flyte will have gained many new fans from this gig at Marlborough, and hopefully we will welcome them back at some point in the future, especially as Will divulged that the band had never been hosted so well in any other venue.
