Class 6 pupils at Ramsbury Primary School held a community plastic-free event on Wednesday (23 May). The event was the culmination of months of dedicated investigation by the class into the environmental impact of plastic.
The pupils hope the event raised awareness of this issue and showed that there are ethical plastic-free alternatives.
The event showcased the children’s work. This included the numerous letters they had written to the Government and businesses asking them to change how plastic is used, and to consider plastic-free alternatives. The responses they received were displayed.
With a lot of hard work and research, Class 6 established connections with various businesses who supported the event by offering plastic-free products for sale or raffle.
The cosmetic firm Lush was one of the companies which donated some of their plastic-free products.
Sian Haynes is Class 6’s teacher: “I have been so impressed with how passionately the children have worked to understand the issue, creating some phenomenal artwork, creative writing, factual leaflets and more – and then choosing to target businesses to make a difference in how plastic is used – all at the same time as working hard for their SATs.”
Rex (aged 11) explained how the months of research and discussion had changed their outlook: “We watched a documentary about how plastic is causing turtles to die and realised how much plastic is in everything – I have helped my family to shop differently to reduce the amount of single-use plastic we use.”
