Marlborough Rugby: Success in Sevens as Compeed 7s win second leg of Secure Trading Super Sevens Series

Marlborough's successful Compeed 7s teamMarlborough's successful Compeed 7s teamLast Saturday (18 May) Marlborough’s Seven’s team travelled up to Coventry for the second leg of the Secure Trading Super Sevens Series after coming 17th out of 40 teams from the first leg which was held at Bury St Edmunds RFC two weeks previous.

Numbers were a little low as there were only twelve players available, nearly half of them were regular first and second team players from the fifteens.  Previously, the lads had got through to the semi-finals only to be knocked out by Student Select.

There were three pool matches to get through and first up was Guildford Bears who got away with a quick try.  Marlborough woke up with the ‘offload King’ Pio Tuwai doing what he does best and throwing a cheeky offload and Marlborough Compeed was off the mark. Final score Marlborough Compeed 17 – Guildford Bears 12.

Next up, the boys were up against Akuma Hurricanes who very organised and fast, Marlborough struggled to take control of the game, final score Akuma Hurricanes 27 – Marlborough Compeed 12.

Final pool game was against Ponty Butchers which was a much closer game resulting in Marlborough Compeed winning 15 – 12.  There was a slight wait to see where Marlborough went next, after all the points for the various teams had been adjudicated, Marlborough Compeed was through to the Plate semi-final.  Some of the lads had picked up injuries, Pita Robanakadavu was out and the Captain Pio Tuwai’s knee had been injured.

There was a two hour wait before it was time to get back out onto the pitch and show Student Select that they may have won last time they met, but the tables would be turned this time.  Finally, it was time to get ready and team manager for the day Moree Nailago, called the boys to warm up.  The boys went through their warm up, last minute strapping was applied and final team talk was given.  Then it was time to go back out onto pitch one.  Both teams were up for the game, it was a fast-paced try scoring game, Inosi Laqekoro, regular first team number eight was putting in some tough hits, Student Select didn’t quite know what to do with him.  They tried to pin him down but that required more than half their team, he stayed upright and just kept powering forward with the opposition hanging off his limbs.  When the whistle blew for full time, the score was Marlborough Compeed 40 – Student Select 21 – point proven.  Unfortunately, Ryan Morrel received an injury to his foot, so that was the end his participation.

The boys were through to the Plate Final where they were up against Nigeria Exiles who didn’t think Marlborough Compeed was going to put up much of a fight – how wrong they were. Marlborough started off strongly and kept their foot on the gas for whole game, winning 40 -7.  Marlborough Compeed had won the game and the final.

It was a great day, the boys worked hard and worked well as a team. Next up is Bournemouth Sevens on Bank Holiday Saturday and Sunday.  The next leg for the Super Sevens Series is on June 15 at Newbury RFC, so a little closer to home - hopefully more glassware to be won.
